After he has fallen into deep sleep and his snoring has turned to dull grumbling, gently roll onto your stomach and let your right arm hang over the edge of the California Queen bedside. You will have to lean close to the edge to reach underneath but you must remain on the bed or he will wake and you may not get another chance to help us. Be sure to remain as quiet as possible; the bedsprings sometimes creak.

On the dusty hardwood floor underneath the bed, next to the tin box of condoms and lubricants, you will find a skeleton key. Not a key made of bones — although at this point, that would not be surprising. This key, heavy and bearing evidence of antiquity, is the only key that will unlock the small, metal door hidden behind the faded tapestry that hangs on the library wall. What lies behind the door will not make sense to you now so I won’t bother to explain it to you.

You must steal the key and hide it somewhere on your person. It does not matter where you hide it so long as it is somewhere his swollen fingers and tongue will not caress in the morning. Think ahead, for he is a greedy man who will partake in early morning loving. After securing the key, return to your previous sleeping position on your stomach, with your left hand on his chest of gray hair until he awakes at daybreak. It is then, after he has retreated to take a shower, that you will be able to make your move.
