Top Artists - Week Ending 2007-09-16

Yeah, I know I did a last.fm post yesterday; get over it. Actually, I think I’ll start posting my weekly chart on a regular basis. I get a lot of inquiries about what I’m listening to. A brief analysis after the jump.
The unusual amount of hip hop suggests there’s some credence to the Soul Bounce article Is It Too Soon to Celebrate a New Rap Renaissance? (you are reading Soul Bounce right?) This year’s releases by The Pharcyde, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kanye West are solid.
Blu & Exile are new on my list this week. If you’re a true fan of independent hip hop, you really need to cop their debut Below The Heavens (the album opens with a Joni Mitchell sample for god’s sake). Check the video for So(ul) Amazin’ if you need a push. Panacea is a quirky, progressive hip hop group that veers to the left with ethereal music samples (“A Tribe Called Quest meets Final Fantasy”?)
Let’s see… Ledisi’s new Lost & Found joint is good stuff as expected; I blogged about Björk yesterday and Marvin Gaye is my favorite male singer of all time; he regularly makes the top of my list.
David Sylvian and The Sea and Cake add some sonic, indie rock flavor to it all. Speaking of The Sea and Cake, hit me up if you’re interested in meeting up for their September 25th concert at The Earl in Atlanta.
I actually just heard (not even an hour ago) some Blu and Exile on an MDOC show and I’m totally digging them. I’m amazed that I’ve somehow stumbled upon all this different hip-hop lately and I’m enjoying it. So glad we have websites to pass the wealth onto others.
So I am not the only black person who likes David Sylvian. I can cancel my appointment to the psychiatrist because I thought I was the only one.
