If you are still sleeping, Jaguar Wright may be the alarm to awaken you. In a time when there are more “nu soul” artists that you can shake an incense at, Jaguar Wright manages to stand out, brilliantly. This is chiefly due to the undeniable fact that this bitch can sing (if you’re offended by me referring to Wright as “bitch”, then this CD is not for you).

Backed by The Roots with cameos by Bilal and Black Thought, this Philly filly delivers more bang for the buck in a budget-conscious era (bargained-priced at most outlets). DD&D is an easy first listen which begs for immediate and frequent replay.

Vesatile and powerful, Wright remains in total vocal control (even when the tough girl sings about the lack of control in her relationships). There is a distinct sense that Wright can hit notes too high or hold them too long (e.g., Rachelle Ferrell) but, she always manages to let up at just the right time.

Some may be turned off by Wright’s liberal use of profanity and honesty (including the scathing liner notes). But, you cannot deny the message. There is no good reason why you shouldn’t own this.

Recipe: Shake (don’t stir) equal parts Millie Jackson, Jill Scott and Mary J. Blige. Add a dash of Ella Fitzgerald and agrnish with a lemon peel.
