I Speak Ylang Ylang
Don’t need to wax gangsta to be toughby j. brotherlove
Don’t underestimate me ‘cause I do poetry
My rhyme is sweet but deadly
Turn your platinum and ice to mere novelty
‘Cause… all you do is skeet on the mic
With trite slang
Talkin’ yang yang
While I speak ylang ylang
wit lyric… aromatic
Ain’t gotta spit no gun click shit ‘cause life is hardcore nuff
Don’t need to wax gangsta to be tough
“untitled flow” Ursula Rucker
Is this from the second album? Didn’t get rave reviews than I thought it would. Your verdict?
*huff*
I said I would review it later…
The entire project isn’t bad but there are some problems. In a nutshell, silver or lead stumbles in theme (too singular for my taste), over-production (obscuring Rucker’s signature voice) and an occasional lack of urgency in lyrical delivery (some pieces simply fall flat). That’s my opinion, anyway.
*lol* That pretty much sums it up, j. Or even simpler: the music is great, the lyrical content/Ursula’s time on the mic, is not. Sometimes it feels like what she’s saying and the rhythm of her flow doesn’t match well with the rhythm of the music. It’s weird.
Well, just reading the words on the page has me feeling it. I guess that’s the poet in me though.
I actually won ticket last night to see Ursula Rucker & Saul Williams this Saturday.
*sippin’ on a tall glass of red haterade and glaring at Antonio*
i haven’t heard the project. but i love the venom!
I loved her first joint, and I think she’s a gifted wordsmith. Sometimes her words pack a lot of punch, but her delivery doesn’t match that power. I gave her first album the grandest review, but the second…man I don’t know. Also, thematically she’s at the same place as the last one. Now that’s not to say that none of these emcees in rap music come back with something new and interesting. On this one, I just felt like it would have been better had I watched her perform it instead of listening to joint in my headphones. Musically it’s good…don’t get me wrong, but J. hit it on the head with the production mention. But this is J’s world and I’m going to leave it up to him to give you the real 411.
