Easier To Love
Sometimes it seems that way to meby j. brotherlove
Sisters Debi, Joni, Kim and Kathy began recording in the early 70’s. But it wasn’t until 1979 that they became stars. Produced by Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers for the Chic organization, Sister Sledge’s We Are Family became the big hit they needed to become a household name. The album is classic Chic from start to finish with the deep basslines, clever arrangements, and addictive choruses typical of Chic.
The album features the megahit title track (which my mother mistakenly referred to as “Meatball Family” after overhearing it blaring from an ice cream truck). The song spoke to all types of women and gay groups and was exceptional given Kathy (who sang lead on the single) was only 20 at the time.
We Are Family also includes the other #1 single “He’s The Greatest Dancer” (who can forget “Halston, Gucci, Fiorucci”?) and “Lost In Music” a standout that had surprisingly modest success as a single. The hidden gem on the album is the underground favorite “Thinking Of You”. Any DJ smart enough to play “Thinking Of You” at an old-school house party receives instant adulation.
Sister Sledge continued to record into the 1990s (even after baby sister Kathy left to pursue a solo career) and had smaller hits like “All American Girls” and “My Guy” but they were never able to come close to the type of success they had with We Are Family.
This week’s lovesong is the lush, anti-war single “Easier To Love” (can we bring back strings to R&B?) from the album. Enjoy.
Sometimes it seems that way to me
It’s easier to love, don’t you seeWon’t somebody please explain
Why all the hurt and the pain?
Can’t you make ‘em see
It’s not supposed to be
All this beautiful land
See the children playing in the sand
I put to you this question
What you after - total destruction?
And I don’t understand why
Sometimes it seems that way to me
It’s easier to love, don’t you see
What more can I say
War is no game you play
Give a person a little might
Well that don’t make him right
And I hope and pray
Oh please let the children play
All this killing each other
You should be loving your brother
And I don’t understand why
Sometimes it seems that way to me
It’s easier to love, don’t you see
Let me hear you say:
(I do) I love you
