Duane Visits ATL, Live Music Ensues

It’ll be one soulful, funky week

by j. brotherlove

My good buddy (and musical attaché) Duane Powell is in Atlanta for a few days. Some of you may know him from the trendsetting record store, Dr. Wax in Hyde Park, Chicago. Duane also hosts the streaming radio program Sound Rotation at Swank Society, Thursday nights, beginning at 9:30. Listen and learn, my friends.

We’ve already kept each other laughing too hard to breathe but tonight, we’ll be at Sugarhill, for their Tuesday Jam Session hosted by Tennessee Slim (aka Joi). The house band includes Little John, Billy Odum, Tres Gilbert and whoever else hops on the stage. Unpredictable funkiness will be had, for sure. Wood will be joining us (remember him?) and possibly Loverboy.

By the way, Sugarhill has become one my favorite haunts. Tucked inside Underground Atlanta, the lounge is intimate with plenty of room for a full band, a dancefloor, cocktail highrises and a second level. Good drinks, great music spun by DJ Kemit, nice eye candy, plenty of covered $3 parking and a 4:00am closing time make this a slam dunk for me.

By the way, they’ve been putting the smackdown on nu soul concerts too hosting, among others, Omar, Eric Roberson and Sleepy Brown. This past weekend Phillipia and Darien Brockington did their thing onstage. Although, the most outrageous performance was Rahbi’s rendition of “Head” by Prince. Y’all ain’t ready!

Be there or be muhfuckin’ square!

I’m definitely happy to hear that Gaelle is recording again. There’s only so many times one can put “Parkway” on repeat. LOL

Thanks a lot, Anitra! Now I’ll have to throw that on repeat for a minute…
