NAACP Makes Good With Julian Bond and Dirty Laundry

Black and gay get higher profile

by j. brotherlove

Since I’ve complained about NAACP on more than one occasion, I think it’s only fair I acknowledge some of their positive moves.

Firstly, I’m applauding NAACP National Chairman Julian Bond for joining the fight for marriage equality in Florida.

He’s urges voters to punch “NO” in November on the so-called “Florida Marriage Protection” amendment. In a video posted on YouTube in December 2007 he stated, “It is divisive. It’s harmful. It does not bring people together. It drives them apart.”

Ditto. Now we just have to work harder on the NAACP with regard to marriage equality as they are still taking the easy way out by not having a position for or against it.

Also, oldest and largest civil rights organization in the United States recently nominated Dirty Laundry for Best Independent Film in the upcoming 39th NAACP Image Awards.

Like most, I still haven’t seen Dirty Laundry. It’s rescheduled for a select theatrical showing in Atlanta, Baltimore and Washington, DC on January 18th, before heading for a DVD release in February. However, it’s nice to have a film dealing with homosexuality in the black family on NAACP’s radar (especially since they screwed up that awards show last year).

I for one am excited that the NAACP has put out SOME word about same-sex anything. As a young man who has yet to have the opportunity to really, really get my fight wet in the GLBT of Color community this is the first word I have personally heard of any Black-centered group having the remote inkling of anything positiive to say about gays. While it is baby-steps, it is inspiring.

I am also totally excited about the movie. I cant wait for it to be released!

congrats to them hard working heffas on “Dirty Laundry”… it’s real cool to see people you know… who’ve put a lot on the line for this project get some well deserved recognition. shout out to nathan williams and maurice jamal!
