South African Gay Prisoners allowed to Marry
South African newspaper Cape Argus reports that approximately 600 prisoners have requested permission to tie the knot in prison. The department of correctional services will abide by the nation’s Civil Union Act implemented in December 2006 which legalized gay marriages.

Brenda Lee, a Los Angeles Fire Department firefighter won a multimillion lawsuit which claimed she was harassed by her superiors because she is African-American and a lesbian. The jury is considering punitive damages as well.

In another example of how the New Jersey civil union law can trip up health care coverage, UPS denies health care coverage to civil-union partners in New Jersey; although the company does cover married gay and lesbian couples in Massachusetts. It all rests on the word “spouse.”
